There are simply too many online meetings. We need to get out of the office and back into real life. How about Iceland? That’s what Marcel Zemp and Richard Herz, founders and co-CEOs of zetcom, decided. A good reason for the trip to Iceland was quickly found. In Selfoss, the annual conference of museum professionals took place in October 2025. Sarpur, the Icelandic cultural heritage database, is currently being migrated to MuseumPlus — and at this museum conference in southern Iceland, the rollout was discussed and celebrated.

So, Iceland it was. What a natural spectacle! Volcanoes paired with glaciers, wild beaches meeting vast landscapes, the gaze losing itself on the horizon. And not a soul in sight — at most a few horses, for whom time seems to stand still. “I used to walk a lot on my own and sing at the top of my lungs. I think a lot of Icelandic people do this. You don’t go to church or a psychotherapist — you go for a walk and feel better.” So said Björk, Iceland’s most famous singer, in a newspaper interview.

At the museum conference in Selfoss, Richard and Marcel wanted to understand why a country of just four hundred thousand inhabitants has over one hundred and thirty museums — and to learn that Icelanders have a passion for collecting things. Traditions are to be preserved and the country’s history passed on.

“Our museums are the collective memory banks of the nation. They don’t just show us what happened, but how it shaped us, providing essential threads to understand who we are as Icelanders,” summarises cultural sociologist Dr. Sigríður Magnúsdóttir.

Through the Icelandic passion for collecting and preserving, many private homes gradually become small museums. From Sveinbjörg Sveinsdóttir, director of the consortium of Icelandic libraries, it became clear how important it is for the country’s many small museums to network with one another — and to engage in exchange with international collections. The MuseumPlus Community Version will now help to make this possible.

What remains from zetcom’s spontaneous trip to Iceland is the short film Iceland Journey — and the memory of Iceland as a welcoming island of lived serenity, free from hustle and unnecessary fuss.

For many years, zetcom has been at the forefront of helping museums and collections make their data accessible to the public online. With MuseumPlus and ArtPlus, we’ve empowered cultural institutions to share their rich collections with a global audience, helping them tell their unique stories through powerful digital platforms.

Accelerating Your Museum’s Digital Transformation with eMuseumPlus

Over time, many of our museum partners have benefited from bespoke online designs, created to align perfectly with their unique needs and visions. These custom solutions have delivered exceptional results, but they naturally come with a larger investment of time, effort, and resources.

As we look toward the future, the next generation of eMuseumPlus offers organizations a more efficient path to achieving their digital goals. Now, museums and collections can accelerate their project timelines with modern, standard templates that eliminate the need for heavy web design involvement. This allows for faster deployment without compromising on the quality and flexibility of the online experience.

Seamless Integration with MuseumPlus

The new eMuseumPlus integrates directly with MuseumPlus through newly developed built-in modules. These modules enable content management functionality, allowing museums to define exhibition information, highlights, and groups for publication on their online collections. This substantially reduces the need for external web design support, empowering organizations to maintain full control over their digital presence.

Customization Made Simple

With modern standard templates at its core, eMuseumPlus offers a perfect balance between speed and customization. Museums can quickly launch their online collections while still maintaining the ability to tailor the designs to their specific requirements. The result is a streamlined, efficient process that allows you to showcase your collections in a fraction of the time it once took.

Museum professionals can enrich their collections with geographic precision, directly inside MuseumPlus. Our latest update introduces a fully integrated GIS data entry feature, enabling users to record exact location data and define areas using an intuitive mapping interface. This spatial layer adds powerful context to every collection object and strengthens digital documentation at its core.

Your collection now has coordinates: GIS data entry in MuseumPlus

With the optional GIS Add-on, MuseumPlus enables institutions to enhance their collection documentation with precise geographic information. Users can enter coordinates, define areas, and visualize spatial data directly within the system via an integrated, user-friendly map interface. This additional layer of information provides valuable context for each object and supports a more comprehensive and structured approach to digital collection management.

What does this mean in practice?

For curators and researchers, it offers the ability to geo-reference artifacts, excavation sites, or historical landmarks using latitude and longitude coordinates or by placing markers directly on the map. This enhances research depth by connecting objects to their original locations, making provenance data more transparent and enriching interpretation and storytelling. Whether documenting the findspot of a sculpture or mapping the journey of an artifact across centuries, spatial context can now be captured and preserved systematically.

For registrars and collections managers, the ability to store, manage, and retrieve geographic data within MuseumPlus reduces complexity and improves workflow efficiency. There is no need to juggle external mapping tools or spreadsheets. The integration ensures that location metadata remains consistent and centralized, aligned with the collection database and accessible across teams.

For exhibition planners and education departments, GIS in MuseumPlus enables the precise georeferencing of collection objects. Locations such as find spots, places of origin or production, and archaeological excavation sites can be accurately recorded and managed using the integrated mapping tools. What sets this GIS add-on apart is its interactive map interface: users do not only enter coordinates manually, they can also define spatial data directly on the map by placing individual points or outlining entire areas. These map-based elements are then linked directly to the relevant objects in the collection. Working visually within the map view enables a more intuitive and accurate spatial documentation process, enriching both scholarly research and curatorial context. While the GIS feature can be applied in various modules, its core strength lies in object-related spatial data.

Detail map view, display of further information (example: object number, object title, type qualifier)

Example view of coordinate fields when coordinates have been recorded manually

For museum leadership and stakeholders, GIS opens new analytical and strategic perspectives. By visualizing where items originate, how they move, and where they are displayed, institutions gain clarity that supports curatorial planning, outreach, and resource allocation.

All of this functionality is embedded directly in MuseumPlus. Users can enter spatial data alongside traditional object metadata, access real-time previews, and manage everything from one centralized interface. The GIS fields support point data as well as shapes, and the interface ensures accuracy without requiring external tools or technical GIS knowledge.
This integration makes MuseumPlus a more holistic, future-ready system.
Since 2022, the Bonnefanten in Maastricht has been a dedicated partner of zetcom, proudly becoming the first museum in the Netherlands to utilize our services. We are thrilled to collaborate with Bonnefanten, the leading art museum of Limburg and the Euregion, known for its extraordinary permanent collections and temporary exhibitions featuring non-mainstream art and artists. At Bonnefanten, visitors can explore a diverse range of art forms, from medieval sculptures to contemporary video installations, housed in a unique building designed by the renowned Italian architect Aldo Rossi.

Bonnefanten’s collection is vast and varied, featuring medieval wooden sculptures, Old Master paintings from the Southern Netherlands and North Italy, modern and contemporary art, Maastricht ceramics and even a treasure room with silver. The museum is a vibrant hub where ancient and contemporary art meet, and its commitment to innovative exhibitions makes it a perfect fit for MuseumPlus.

As the first Dutch museum to implement MuseumPlus as its collection management software, Bonnefanten is leading the way in modernizing its processes. The museum’s decision to switch to MuseumPlus was driven by the need for a user-friendly, future-proof CMS that could handle everything from collection registration to exhibition management. With a dedicated team from both the museum and zetcom, the migration to MuseumPlus was meticulously planned and executed, ensuring a smooth transition.

In a recent Q&A, Bonnefanten shared insights into their selection process and experiences with zetcom, highlighting the importance of having a reliable partner and a robust, flexible CMS. They praised MuseumPlus for its ease of use, advanced search functions, and the ability to generate standardized reports, all of which have significantly improved their daily operations.

Looking ahead, Bonnefanten aims to fully integrate MuseumPlus into their organization, using it as the central tool for managing both collection objects and loans. With plans to explore additional features like barcode scanning in the future, Bonnefanten is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead with MuseumPlus.

Read the full Q&A:

What prompted your initial exploration for a new CMS?

The supplier of our previous CMS announced the end of support for their product. We took this opportunity to reflect on our needs and started searching for a new CMS with an open mind, forming a dedicated team to carry out this important task.

What key criteria guided your vendor comparisons during the selection process?

Our CMS team created a list of requirements, focusing on user-friendliness, modern design, and future-proof features. We wanted a CMS with a clear API for syncing with our online collection and other programs, along with strong customer service and data protection.

What inspired the greatest confidence in your choice of zetcom?

We were initially impressed by the look and feel of MuseumPlus and the professionalism of zetcom’s staff. Positive feedback from other international museums using MuseumPlus also played a significant role in our decision.

What factors contributed most to your readiness for the migration project?

Consensus within our organization was key. We had a dedicated team and a skilled project leader from zetcom, who was familiar with our previous CMS. We thoroughly prepared the migration process, ensuring that we had a realistic plan and support from our IT department.

What aspect of your daily processes has seen the most significant improvement with the use of MuseumPlus?

MuseumPlus has enhanced our registration processes, location management, and loan traffic. The search functions are efficient, and colleagues across different departments now use MuseumPlus, making it a central tool in our operations.

What do you value about working with zetcom?

zetcom has proven to be a very professional company, and we appreciate their prompt response to our queries through Zendesk.

Looking ahead, how would you define success one year from now?

We hope that MuseumPlus will be fully integrated into our organization, serving as the central tool for all our collection and loan management needs. We are also interested in exploring new features like barcode scanning.

Efficient Solutions for Museums: More Time, Fewer Technical Hurdles (Digital Asset Management)

We are excited to announce the official partnership between zetcom MuseumPlus and FotoWare in the field of Digital Asset Management.

This collaboration strengthens our integrated CMS and DAM solutions, streamlining the workflows of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs). Together, we empower cultural institutions to focus on their core mission: preserving cultural heritage.

“Our customers will save a significant amount of time thanks to the seamless integration of the two systems, allowing them to concentrate on their essential tasks,” says Dominik Gertsch (zetcom CCO).

Key benefits for museums, galleries, and archives:

Seamless Integration: Efficient provisioning and matching of images and metadata between MuseumPlus and FotoWare solutions for a streamlined workflow.

Improved Functionality: Our integrated suite simplifies workflows, reduces complexity, and minimizes data redundancy.

Proven Success: Renowned institutions such as the Louvre Paris, the National Museums of Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden, the Queensland Art Gallery, and the Rhode Island School of Design trust our software solutions.

Intelligent Search: Workflows allow metadata from MuseumPlus to be inherited by media assets, making them quickly searchable.

“This partnership enables institutions to focus more on their core mission, which is the preservation and presentation of cultural heritage,” says Ove Høgås-Evensen (FotoWare).

Through this collaboration, we make it easier for cultural institutions to manage digital assets and collections. We optimize data quality across systems and prevent redundant storage of media data. This way, we quickly enrich large data sets with existing metadata and make them searchable.

Additional features such as online image editing and embed/share links are also available. Contact us to learn more about the interface.
